What is Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering is one of the major divisions within the profession and its principles are involved in the design, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems which technology has produced. Mechanical engineers are also concerned with the operations of all kinds of machinery, and the production of power. They must conceive, research, design, develop, test, manufacture and sell equipment for these purposes. Manufacturing is a complex and requires a great deal of specialized knowledge. Manufacturing engineers are required by all kinds of companies which manufacture a great variety of machines, robotics and other equipment. The manufacturing engineer may be responsible for the design, selection of materials, specifications and the improvement of production processes and equipment. Responsibility for plant layout, production management and control, as well as plant maintenance is also required of manufacturing engineers.
Mechanical Engineering is a very broad branch of engineering. Mechanical engineers are found in almost every type of engineering activity like power generation, transportation systems for land, sea and air, environmental protection and, bio medical engineering. They are found in a wide range of industries which manufacture machinery and consumer goods and offer research and technical services
Mechanical Engineers are required in all manufacturing facilities. The working criteria of a mechanical engineer changes according to the type and domain of the company they are working with and the area of specialization. In a broader sense it can be said that mechanical engineer works on design and control of a system that goes into the process of manufacturing the machinery and product. He tests new systems for feasibility and efficiency and carries out quality management and improvement process.
There is tremendous scope for mechanical engineers in automobile engineering, cement industry, steel, power sector, hydraulics, manufacturing plants, drilling and mining industry, petroleum, aeronautical, biotechnology and many more. Nowadays they are also increasingly needed in the environmental and bio-medical fields.
A beginner in Mechanical Engineering can opt for various job openings such as: Maintenance Engineer, safety Engineer, Quality Assurance, CNC Programmer, Jr. Engineer, Design Engineer, CAD/CAM Trainer, Production Supervisor/Engineer, R&D Trainee etc.
